Irish Soda Bread Recipe!

December 28, 2011

The Sisters of Mercy’s roots started in Ireland and at our gatherings, we like to remember our heritage by having some delicious Irish Soda Bread. Here is a recipe from Sister Anne C. who recently baked some for our Comfortable Cup of Tea event

Irish Soda Bread

Mix together:

  • 3 cups flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • ¼ tsp. salt

Crumble into above mix:

  • 1 stick butter

Add:

  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk
  • 1 ½ cups raisins

Mix well and put into a well greased and floured skillet (I have used a regular pan for this and it works fine). Add 1 egg if desired. Bake at 350 for 45 – 50 minutes then enjoy!

    Um…about that “add 1 egg if desired”…

Do you mean to the wet ingredients part of the recipe, or plopped on top of the batter as it goes in the oven?

Good question! The egg is intended to be added to the batter. The recipe is pretty moist to begin with so I usually don’t add the egg.
