Tragic End to Mexican Human Rights Case

March 1, 2011

By Marianne Comfort, Institute Justice Team

A couple of weeks ago, Sister Aine O’Connor described her experiences in southern Texas and her sorrow over the violence families are struggling with on the Mexican side of the border.

We shared then a case that Amnesty International brought to our attention of an abduction of a sister and brother, and his wife, in early February. Their family had been targeted since last year, when another sister, who had ben protesting against the violence in the area by organized crime and against human rights violations committed by the military, was murdered. The killing of a brother followed a few months later.

Amnesty International is now calling for the Mexican government to provide protection to the rest of the family, and to investigate the five murders. You can learn more about the case and about suggested actions here.
