A New Sister Becomes a Novice

August 3, 2010

By Sister Carolyn B.

About 400 sisters, associates, guests and staff cheered as Claudia Cano became Sister Claudia Cano at our South Central Community Assembly in June.  It was a wonderful experience to be one of the many sisters who welcomed her and promised to support her in this important step on her journey with us.  What brought her to this moment in her life?

Sister Carol Ann, her incorporation minsiter, testified to her readiness to enter the novitiate.  She said that she had asked Sister Claudia, “What is the deepest desire of your heart?”  She had responded, “It is to walk with God, to know God, and to stay with God as I live each day.” She also shared that being part of a mercy community of religious women committed to making our world a better place for all people is what draws her, fuels her for this life and stirs up hope within her for our world.

As I listened to her expression of her call to mercy, I was reminded of what draws me even now to our community.  It is a glorious thing to be part of the mercy community as we reach out to those in our world who are in need.  I answered the community’s invitation to serve as a vocation minister because I saw how important it is to have more Sisters of Mercy to minsiter with those who are struggling to improve their lives.  Sister Claudia’s desire to walk with God corresponds to my own desire to be one with God as I go about my everyday life.  Sister Claudia’s response to her call has given me new energy and enthusiasm as I continue to live out my call to Mercy.
